Pew Research Report on Muslims in America

The Pew Research Center, one of the most well-respected polling groups in the US, did a study in 2007 on American Muslims. The title of their report: "Muslim Americans: Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream."
Amid all the rhetoric about Islam these days, the report is a factual look at the issue. The summary is very easy reading and I definitely recommend that you look it over. You can find the Pew report here. In light of our discussion on Sunday, it will be useful to have some solid information.

KBC needs volunteers for Rebuilding in Haiti

Teams of volunteers are needed in Haiti as disaster relief transitions to a rebuilding phase, according to Coy Webb, disaster relief associate for the Kentucky Baptist Convention.

“The North American Mission Board, Southern Baptist disaster relief and the Florida Baptist Convention have set a goal of trying to rebuild 5,000 homes in Haiti,” Webb said. "With that kind of goal, there’s an unlimited number of teams that we would need to make that happen.”

An ideal size for a team would be about 10 people, Webb said, and one team probably could complete two permanent homes in one week. When teams arrive a concrete foundation already will be laid upon which the 246-square-foot house can be built. The structures are designed in such a way that they can be expanded by the homeowner later.

To find out more about helping rebuild homes in Haiti, contact the Kentucky Baptist Convention Partnership Missions Department at partnership@kybaptist.org
 or (502) 489-3529 or (866) 489-3529 (toll-free in Ky.).

Disaster Relief in Pike County

As many of you know, the recent flooding in Pike County has been severe, resulting in widespread losses: over 200 homes were damaged or washed away, many people were out of electricity and water, and two people were killed. Click here for the Herald Leader story: http://www.kentucky.com/2010/07/19/1354066/at-least-one-dead-in-pike-flood.html

Kentucky Baptists have been busy in Pike County with disaster relief. There are still some urgent needs in the area. Would you be able to locate and donate any of the items?

  • Good, clean furniture (couches, chairs, dinette sets, dressers, chests, end tables, beds, mattress sets-all sizes)
  • Lamps
  • Working appliances (refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, microwaves)
  • Small appliances (coffee pots, toasters, mixers, etc.)
  • New or like new pots and pans, sets of dishes, sets of glasses, flatware, and cooking utensils
  • New or like new linens (towels and sheets for all size beds - please fold sheets together as a set and use masking tape to keep them together, then write the size on the tape)
Please email us right away at church.cedarcreek@gmail.com if you can help. Thanks and Blessings.

This Sunday, we welcomed two new believers into the family at Cedar Creek. Samara Ives made a decision to follow Christ at Missions Adventure Camp. Emma Robbins made her decision at VBS at Watts Chapel Baptist Church. We are so excited about what God is doing in the lives of these two young women and so happy to be a part of it.

Health Careers Camp at Cedar Creek

The Lincoln County Health Careers camp was hosted by Cedar Creek. Congratulations to Forrest Calico for his creative work putting the camp together. By all accounts, the camp was a great success and was an important part of several young people thinking about their future direction for health careers. Thanks to our Girlfriends for catering the food to the group. You can be sure they were well-fed. The picture was taken at their graduation from the camp.

Four Biblical Principles for Financial Management

Here are the four principles for keeping our financial house that Danny covered in his recent sermon:

1) Recordkeeping

Proverbs 27: 23-24 says "Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and attend to your herds: for riches are not forever, nor does a crown endure to all generations."

2) Plan our spending

This principle is called a budget. Financial freedom is never determined by how much money we make but rather how we spend what we make.
Proverbs 21: 5 "The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty,But those of every one who is hasty, surely to poverty.

3) Saving for the future

Proverbs 6: 6-8 "Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise. Which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

4) Be content with what we have

Proverbs 21: 17 "He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; He who loves wine and oil will not be rich. Indulging in luxuries will never make us wealthy.

Simple principles that can keep us from disaster and help us to serve God.

Pentecost Doves

For Pentecost, Cedar Creek is doing an art project using folded paper doves. If you picked up your paper and instructions at church last Sunday, you are good to go. If you need paper, cut a piece of white, yellow, or red paper into an 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" square. Follow the step by step instructions in this video and bring your doves to church this Sunday. The more we make the better the art project will look.

Equestrian Ministries

A big thanks to Lesley Miracle for hosting the Lincoln Co Women's Ministry at Cedar Creek last night!

It was great to see so many people at the church, enjoying our facilities and hospitality. Lesley is working hard to keep us connected to the bigger world of Baptists across Kentcuky and the world. Connecting is one of the first steps in Engaging, so we appreciate Lesley's work in keeping us connected to God's mission throughout the world.

At the meeting, Larry Martin spole about ministries at World Equestrian Games coming to Lexington. Larry is a Lincoln Co native and an experienced horseman who has been involved internationally with missions and equestrian ministry. One of my dreams is to start an equestrian ministry in Lincoln County. Some of you may be interested in equestrian ministries or serving at the World Equestrian Games. Information about volunteering is available at the website of Equestrian Ministries International, click on World Equestrian Games, here is the link: http://www.equestrianministries.org/WEG.html

High water got you down?

I hope that everyone has made it through the rain and floods safely. Makes you appreciate Noah in a whole new way. We've turned forty days of rain into a cute children's story - but this makes us realize that only a couple days of rain sends us into a disaster and panic. I know that some of you have some real stories about what you've experienced yesterday.

We had the church open last night as a disaster relief center. Big thanks to Lisa Bailey for getting that moving. While no one needed shelter last night, there may be times in the when our church could really make a difference. Let's think about this and have some plans ready that we can set into motion.

Many Blessing to our whole church family. Have a Great Week!

Buckets of Hope for Haiti Update

Remember all those white buckets you filled and sent out?
It's good to know that we have been part of a great outpouring of aid for Haiti.

Here is an update on the Buckets of Hope for Haiti project:
KY Baptists collected 9,650 buckets with 300,000 lbs of food valued at $400,000 worth of relief effort! All buckets have made it to Miami and are being sent to Haiti.

In addition, the Kentucky Baptist Convention has received nearly $150,000 of cash donations with $50,000 sent to the Florida Baptist Convention and the rest primarily spent on food and medical supplies. 8 Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief teams have been sent (40 individuals) since the earthquake. Two additional teams are scheduled to be sent in April. In addition to these groups several KY Baptist churches have sent groups to Haiti through connections that they have established over the years.

Mission Trip fund raisers

Thanks to everyone who has been participating in the fund raisers for the Dominican Republic mission trip! The photography and the Pampered Chef events have been big successes and the team appreciates your work and generosity! Remember that this is not "for" the team members - but is an effort of our whole church community to reach out to the Dominican Republic. Some are going, but all of us are involved. And the Holy Spirit is energizes, motivates and unifies us in working toward the goal.

CedarCreek participates in Buckets of Hope for Haiti

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, our church is reaching out to make a difference. Ten buckets of food supplies will be sent from our church to feed hungry people in Haiti. We want to thank each one of our members who is participating in Buckets of Hope by bringing supplies to stock the buckets.

Not only will the buckets provide needed food items, but they will be given out by Haitian Baptist churches - raising the profile of those churches in their communities and allowing them to reach out in meaningful ways, even in the midst of their own tragedy. Like everyone else, many of these churches lost members, pastors, and buildings.

As we send the buckets, we pray for the people of Haiti and for those who will eat the food we send. We pray that the Baptist churches of Haiti will be established and strengthened. And we pray that the Spirit of God will be experienced, in healing and redeeming, in spiritual awakening.

VITA ministries

We want this blog to be helpful to our members and to interested visitors.

That involves making as much information available as possible. To do so,m we will provide links to documents that describe aspects of our ministry, as well as forms that we use for church business.

An example of that is our entrepreneurial ministry we call VITA.
